BOSTON—A $200,000 matching contribution for recreational enhancements in Reading was approved by House lawmakers yesterday as part of their supplemental spending plan.
The money can be used to improve playing fields, playgrounds and other recreation sites in town.
“Reading is very proud of its recreational programs and has a long history of providing a wide variety of activities for residents,” said House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones Jr. “I’m pleased that my colleagues in the House want to recognize that with a contribution from the state.”
Jones, R-North Reading, and Rep. Patrick Natale advocated for the money to be included in the House supplemental budget.
“I’m extremely pleased with the new funding for Reading’s recreational needs,” said Natale, D-Woburn. “Recreational activities bring our residents together in a fun and safe environment. I believe that by supporting positive activities for our children now we will help our youth succeed later in life.”
The funding must be agreed to by the Senate before it heads to Gov. Mitt Romney’s desk for approval.
