BOSTON—House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. today announced to his constituents a new Department of Defense initiative. The DOD says active, reserve and former service members who had their enlistment extended or retirement suspended due to stop loss are eligible for this special pay. Stop loss is the involuntary extension of a service member's active duty service under the enlistment contract in order to retain them beyond their initial end of term of service date. In order to be eligible the person must have served on active duty between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2009.
All applications must be submitted to the respective services no later than Oct. 21, 2010. Eligible personnel will receive a payment of $500 per month for each month (or any portion of a month) that a member was retained on active duty due to stop loss.
“Our military men and women put their lives on the line everyday in order to protect our country,” said Representative Jones. “It is important that they know all of the benefits available to them, especially during these difficult economic times.”
