Boston- House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. and Senator Bruce Tarr today announced North Reading has been awarded funds through the Student Awareness of Fire Education Program for fiscal year 2010.
Through the S.A.F.E. program, which is a state initiative to provide resources to local fire departments to conduct fire and life safety education programs in grades K-12, North Reading will receive $1,912. The mission is to enable students to recognize the dangers of fire and more specifically the fire hazards tobacco products pose.
“It is incredibly important that our children are prepared to deal with a crisis,” said Representative Jones. “The S.A.F.E. program gives our children the tools and education they need to react to a dangerous situation and I am grateful North Reading is a recipient of funds through this program.”
“A fire can turn into a tragedy in an instant, and informed students can prevent that from happening,” said Senator Tarr. “Thanks to the initiative of the North Reading Fire Department, we can invest state funds in a truly important local safety effort.”
The S.A.F.E. program is a vital resource for our communities and has helped decrease the number of children who die in fires in our state each year by 66%.
