Boston- House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr., Representative Bradford Hill and Senator Bruce Tarr today announced Middleton has been awarded funds through the Student Awareness of Fire Education Program for fiscal year 2010.

Through the S.A.F.E. program, which is a state initiative to provide resources to local fire departments to conduct fire and life safety education programs in grades K-12, Middleton will receive $1,912. The mission is to enable students to recognize the dangers of fire and more specifically the fire hazards tobacco products pose.

“It is incredibly important that our children are prepared to deal with a crisis,” said Representative Jones. “The S.A.F.E. program gives our children the tools and education they need to react to a dangerous situation and I am grateful Middleton is a recipient of funds through this program.”

“These funds will go a long way in teaching our kids the ins and outs of fire prevention,” said Representative Hill.

“The Middleton Fire Department is taking the initiative to give kids the ability to save lives and prevent tragedies caused by fire,” said Senator Tarr. “Thanks to them, we’re investing state funds in a truly important local safety effort.”

The S.A.F.E. program is a vital resource for our communities and has helped decrease the number of children who die in fires in our state each year by 66%.
