BOSTON ā A bill allowing residents continued access to their homes via
Longwood Road was signed into law Monday by Gov. Mitt Romney.
The legislation, which was requested by Reading voters, authorizes the Reading Conservation Commission to grant easements along Longwood Road for access and utility purposes, including the construction and repair of sewer, water and drainage pipes.
The area around Longwood Road is considered conservation land, and the legislation formalizes a longstanding arrangement the residents have to use the road to get home.
Reading residents voted in favor of granting the easements at the November Town Meeting. Selectmen then passed the bill on for legislative approval, and submitted it to be filed by House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones Jr.
In a combined effort led by Jones, R-North Reading, local lawmakers including Sen. Richard Tisei, R-Wakefield, and Rep. Patrick Natale, D-Woburn, won passage of the bill in the House and Senate.
āIām happy we were able to move this legislation along so quickly and get results for the town, and specifically the residents of Longwood Road,ā Jones said.
